Overview
A journey to Himalaya is feeling which cannot be expressed in words. This spiti valley road trip is done mostly out of enthusiasm, to see the celestial lands, to know the challenges in riding.
The motorbike tour including unlimited fun and challenge to the one of remotest region of Himachal Pradesh via Kinnaur Spiti valley. This tour involves visiting remote valleys, villages and crossing over high mountain passed providing spectacular view of snow capped mountains, rugged terrain and thousand years old monasteries. But if compared to Ladakh, Spiti valley is still very harsh and desolate. It takes a certain amount of madness to drive on these uninviting, mesmerizing landscapes.

Day 1:- Manali – Jibhi
Day 2:- Jibhi – Sarahan
Day 3:- Sarahan – Sangla

Day 1:- Manali – Jibhi
Today morning we will start our journey to Jibhi village. We will take diversion from Aut to Saraj valley. Jibhi is one of the favourite backpacker destinations mostly famous for fishing and is covered in thick pine forest. Jibhi is known for enchanting sceneries of Great Himalayan National park and photogenic places. May be that’s why foreigners make their home for months before they continue their journey to upper Himalayan region.
Day 2:- Jibhi – Sarahan
Today morning we will start our ride to Jalori pass(3120m). Jibhi village is the base of the summit Jalori Pass. Sharp curves start from Jibhi and are very steep till which reach the pass. Jalori pass connects the Kullu district and Shimla district and its hight altitude location provides the enchanting views of Great Himalayan National Park. We will descend to the other side from Jalori, the road has very bad patches till Anni but has very good view points in between. Few kilometers after Rampur we will take diversion from Jeori to Sarahan which is about 15kms. View from Sarahan are mind blowing and its peace and tranquility is like none other. Sarahan is also known as the – The Gateway of Kinnaur.
Day 3:- Sarahan – Sangla
Today morning we will visit Bhimakali Tempe which is believed to be 800 years old and is dedicated to goddess Bhimakali. The temple has the architecture which is unique blend of Indian and Buddhist architecture style. Early after we will start for Kinnaur valley and our first stop will be Sangla in the Kinnaur. Sangla(2696m) have thick forest slopes and offers lovely views of the high mountains surrounding it. The road is quite adventurous and has been carved from the mountain and cling to cliffs for most of journey and followed by the Baspa river adds the extra charm to the route. By evening we will arrive at Sangla.
Day 4:- Sangla – Chitkul – Kalpa
Today first we will visit to Chitkul(3450m) which is the last village in the valley, beyond which there lies Tibet. Chitkul has magical beauty and views which village provides are unmatched and incomparable. The temples are brilliantly carved here and even the houses. Don’t forget to take a photograph with sign board saying – ‘Hindustan ka Akhiri Dabha’. You will fell in love with this fairy tale village. Afternoon we will head towards Kalpa. Kalpa(2960m) is one of the best places to see the sunset and sunrise over the Kinner Kailash range.
Day 5:- Kalpa – Nako – Tabo
If you want to see the most beautiful morning of your life, get up early before the sun rises. The view of rising sun touching the snow peaks will leave you spell bound. Today we will have to ride long through upper Kinnaur area. On the way we will stop and Nako Village(3662m). Nako lies on the edge of the Kinnaur district but character wise it is similar to Spiti valley. In the center of Nako village there is a sacred lake. The lake is very beautiful but nobody is allowed to bath or fishing in the lake. After exploring Nako we will head off to the Tabo. Enroute we will take detour to Geu village which holds the mummified body of a monk. Evening we will arrive at Tabo(3280m).
Day 6:- Tabo – Dhankar – Kaza
Well finally we are in magnificent Spiti Valley. Tabo is also known as the Ajanta of Himalayas. Untouched and preserved its glorious heritage, Tabo monastery is famous for its holiness and also a World Heritage Site by UNESCO. Amazingly is 1200 years monastery is well preserved and painting here will make you feel that you are living the past. Then afternoon we will head to visit Dhankar monastery. As the name says it means fortress on the cliff. Dhankar monastery (3870m) offer some amazing view of Spiti Valley. The monastery if built as gigantic as a fort. Seeing the moving shadows of the floating clouds on the flood plains of Spiti and Pin River will make you feel that you are God of these mountains. Late afternoon we will head to Kaza.
Day 7:- Kaza Local Sightseeing (Key Kibber – Langza – Komik – Hikkim)
Kaza (3800m) is the main headquarter of Spiti Valley. Today will be our sightseeing day around Kaza in which we will cover highest village and highest post office of the world. We start from Kibber which is around 20 kms from Kaza. Key monastery in Kibber is approximately 1000 years old and Kibber village is also very beautiful.
Then move to Langza, a small village situated at altitude of 4400 meters. The grand Buddha statue is the primary attraction of the village. Langza is also known for finding ancient fossils and there is also a fossil center in the village. Komic village at an altitude of 4600 meters is the world highest motor able village. The village has high vintage points with some awesome views and a Tangyud Monastery. You can see entire Spiti valley from here. Then we will visit Hikkim village (4440m) which has world highest post office. You can also send postcards to your loved ones from here.
Day 8:- Kaza – Chandartal
Today will be the most arduous day in the itinerary. In morning we will hit the road for Chandartal Lake(4300m). After Losar, brace yourself for the ascent to Kunzum La and for another episode of World’s Worst Roads (which lasts until you reach Gramphu and merge with the traffic of Leh-Manali).
Kunzum Pass(4590m) which has small temple of goddess Durga and with lots of flags. Chandartal which is also known as the moon lake due to is crescent shape. In the midst of brown shade of mountains there is turquoise blue patch of the lake. Your eye soothed by the beauty of lake. The lake looks completely different in the different times of the day. We can also go for the parikarma of the lake which will take around 2 hours. . If you dare enough you can also take dip on the side of lake. We will stay at camp overnight. And don’t forget to witness the magical night sky from here, you can see the entire Milky way galaxy from naked eyes.
Day 9:- Chandartal – Manali
Today as our final day, ride will be the toughest to way back home. We will try to leave as early as possible because water streams on the road starts gushing at full speed as the rising temperature makes the snow melt rapidly. The infamous Pagal Nallas on the way will test your riding skills. Till Chatru road is followed by Chandra river and is complete off road trail full of water streams. From Gramphoo we will connect to the Leh – Manali highway and start the ascend for Rohtang pass towards Manali. Rohtang pass(3978m) connects the Lahaul valley and Kullu valley. First time you will see the herds of vehicle and traffic jam in the entire tour. But the views of high Pir Panjal peaks are breathtaking from above. Finally in evening we will reach Manali. You can also catch Volvo for Delhi or have rest day in Manali.
